How much education do I need in this field?
To be a Nursing assistant there are certain types of education courses that are needed to be taken. Training programs for nursing assistants usually require a high school diploma or the equivalent as a prerequisite. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, some high school curricula include education for nursing assistant, also called nurse's aides or attendants. Most states require nursing assistants to complete a postsecondary certificate program. Vocational schools, nursing homes, community colleges and hospitals offer these programs, which take approximately six to 12 weeks (Farnen). Take prerequisite classes that cover medical terminology, structure and function of the human body, computer basics, CPR and first aid. Certification in Nursing Assisting program may consist of only two courses: one a classroom course in basic patient ca and the other a clinical externship. Do at least 75 hours of nursing aide training for CNA's who work in nursing homes. Additionally, a certification candidate must pass a comprehensive examination (Wilson).
